Smokers Delight Turns 25
Classic Nightmares on Wax album reissued to celebrate milestone anniversary
It’s 25 year since Leeds producer Nightmares on Wax – AKA DJ E.A.S.E – put out his seminal downtempo album Smokers Delight. The much-loved album marked a big stylistic shift away from the bleep techno of early Nightmares’ records into a sublime stoner’s blend of soul, hip-hop, dub, strings, samples and lush, meditative grooves.
Since its release, the album has been a consistent success for the Warp label, achieving Silver certification in the UK. To mark the 25-year anniversary, the album will be re-issued on Friday 3 April. The coloured vinyl format features additional tracks.
“This album changed my life,” said E.A.S.E. “It feels amazing to be revisiting it a quarter of a century on.”
E.A.S.E had planned an album tour of Europe and North America, which would have seen him play with a 14-piece orchestrated live band. Unsurprisingly, the tour is one of countless events postponed in light of the Coronavirus pandemic. “Like most people we have been following the news and all info over the last few weeks, and it is now clear the shows as they are simply can't happen,” he said. “We are working with our family of agents, venues and promoters worldwide to try and reschedule the tour for later in the year. As soon as we know more about the new dates, we will let you all know. For now though, keep your vibrations high, be healthy in your actions and stay positive.”
The 25th anniversary issue of Smokers Delight come on the heels of his standout entry in the Back to Mine mix series last year. Featuring tracks from Fat Freddy’s Drop, Children of Zeus, Soulphiction and more, E.A.S.E described that compilation as less chillout and more “a mini crack-on”.
